Every day, many workers go to industry jobs involving auto, agriculture, aviation, coal and lumber, construction, manufacturing and assembly line, maritime, metal and aluminum, oil and power, transportation, and waste removal and hauling. Workers and military service men and women are also considered to be at high-risk for exposure to toxic substances known to cause various forms of cancer. There are many examples of big industry suppressing scientific knowledge and hazards, falsifying reports, and intentionally failing to warn….solely for profit at the expense of exposed workers.

Toxic exposures can be the basis for product liability and personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits and include these products among others:

asbestos
benzene
lead
beryllium
arsenic
paints
solvents
adhesives
solder
hexavalent chromium
TCE
PCBs
mercury
heavy metals
pesticides
herbicides
DDT
mold
formaldehyde

Cancer injuries include: mesothelioma, lung cancer, leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, brain damage, birth and reproductive injuries, and cancers of the stomach, kidneys, colon and esophagus. Noncancerous injuries include: restrictive airway disease, pneumonia, silicosis, pulmonary fibrosis and interstitial lung disease (scarring of the lungs). Many victims must endure difficult painful treatments including major surgery, vital organ resection, chemotherapy, organ and bone marrow transplants. Often there is no treatment for incurable and fatal diseases, with only pain management in hospice care. Spouses and children are vulnerable to take home exposures.

Asbestos and Mesothelioma
The dangers of asbestos are now well publicized; but for almost 100 years beginning in the industrial revolution, the dangers and cancer hazards were concealed from the public by the big asbestos industry. Despite major overhauls to Occupational Safety and Health (OSHA) laws; and as unbelievable as it may sound, many asbestos-containing products like cement pipe and brake linings were still being manufactured and sold through the early 1990’s. Even today, imported foreign brake pads and drywall still contain asbestos. And sadly, asbestos is being exported in large quantities to developing countries.

Injuries caused by asbestos are life-threatening and irreversible. Mesothelioma is an aggressive and deadly cancer to the lining of the lungs, and is a signature injury of asbestos exposure. Given that asbestos-related disease can take up to 50 years to manifest, the scourge of asbestos will continue long into this century.

Benzene, Pesticides and Leukemia
Benzene and pesticides are cancer causing and have been widely used over a long period of time. Benzene presents a substantial health risk to refinery workers, mechanics, tanker truck and transport workers, fuel station attendants, and auto and aviation mechanics. Pesticide and herbicide use in agriculture and farming also presents significant dangerous health risks and cause cancer. Exposure to benzene is usually through inhalation and by absorption through the skin.

Injuries caused by products containing benzene and pesticides include: blood cancers, such as leukemias, lymphomas and multiple myeloma; and kidney cancer. Children are at great risk of developing leukemia caused by pesticide exposure and brain damage related to lead-based paint.

Pollution and Contamination
Groundwater contamination, toxic landfill waste, air and noise pollution are the most common type of community and neighborhood group cases for health injuries and property damages. These cases typically relate to the release of pollutants from current and closed manufacturing plants and industrial factories, landfills and waste disposal sites, gas stations, and storage tanks. Toxic chemicals usually found are hexavalent chromium, trichloroethylene (TCE), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), benzene, and pesticides.
